Kilohana Kai and the McKinley Tennis Team - October 15, 2009

Kilohana Kai Scholarship Fundraising Program “Na Opio Pa’ani 2009 / 2010”Kilohana Kai is now marking its 14th year of providing college scholarships to the young people of Hawai'i and grants to schools for educational trips and programs. We again ask our loyal supporters for your kokua by your support in our current fundraising programs. Make any monetary donations you are comfortable with, participate in our escrip (Safeway/Macy) and volunteer to help in contacting friends and acquaintances to support our various fundraising efforts. By many of us joining hands together, our goals can be achieved.

The core of Kilohana Kai’s strength remains the MCKINLEY TENNIS PROGRAMS and the young people who took an additional step forward to help those who would follow them. Through the years since our inception in 1995, we have been blessed with the support of former team members, parents, teachers, friends and the many others who rallied to our cause when called upon.

Last school year 2008/2009, Kilohana Kai was able to provide the following scholarships and grants: Scholarships McKinley High School (2) – Hawaii Baptist Academy (1) - Aiea High School (1) – Kaimuki High School (1) Travel and Program Grants – McKinley HS Project Graduation – McKinley High School (Theater Group II) – McKinley Robotic Team - McKinley Tennis Team – St. Anthony School (Oahu) – LW American Heritage Foundation (Los Angeles) (East Coast / Washington D.C. trip) - IHS. This school year, we hope to maintain as close to the same level of donations as in the previous year and we hope to possibly expand our outreach to one or more schools.

We know that in this difficult economic time, your shrinking dollar is being squeezed to the limit. We look to solicit your help in ways that will not burden just a few people who are directly involved in our programs, but to share the tasks together with as many who are concerned with providing the best for Hawaii’s young people. Please consider supporting some or all of our fundraising projects we have initiated.

Our goal to support educational endeavors can only help ourselves and our community. Your monetary donations are welcomed and appreciated. (See Attached fundraising form and information materials)

Kilohana Kai Scholarship Fundraising Program “Na Opio Pa’ani 2009”

Kilohana Kai is now marking its 14th year of providing college scholarships to the young people of Hawaii and grants to schools for educational trips and program. We again ask our loyal supporters for your kokua by your support in our current fundraising programs.Make any monetary donations you are comfortable with, participate in our escrip (Safeway/Macy) and Goodshop.com programs or volunteer to help in contacting friend and acquaintances to support our efforts. Only a combined effort by all of us together will our goals be achieved.

The core of Kiloha Kai’s strength remains the MCKINLEY TENNIS PROGRAMS and the young people who took an additional step forward to help those who would follow them. Through the years since our inception in 1995, we have been blessed with the support of former team members, parents, teachers, friends and the many other who rallied to our cause when called upon.

Last school year 2007/2008, Kilohana Kai was able to provide the following scholarships and grants:

 Scholarships:
       McKinley High School (2)
       Hawaii Baptist Academy (2)
       Aiea High School (2)
       Kaimuki High School (1)

Travel and Program Grants:
McKinley HS Japanese Club (Japan Trip)
      McKinley HS Project Graduation
      McKinley HS (Theater Group II)
      McKinley Tennis Team
      Waialua Elementary School
      Kaahumanu Elementary School
St. Theresa School (Washington D.C. trip)
      St. Anthony School (Oahu)
LW American Heritage Foundation (Los Angeles)(East Coast/ Washington D.C. trip)
      IHS

This school year, we hope to maintain as close to the same level of donations as in the previous year with one major additional project. The McKinley High School Athletic Master Plan has begun to take shape with the soft-ball stadium ready to begin. In phase II of the plan, the football field and track will be relocated Diamond Head of the present field towards Pensacola Street. Funding for this part is through HCDA. This move will eliminate our present tennis courts (plans call for its relocation EWA of the new football field and track). However, no funding for the replacement of the tennis courts is available at this time. Kilohana Kai will help to support a tennis court fund for a future tennis court complex. We know that in this difficult economic time, your shrinking dollar is being squeezed to the limit. We look to solicit your help in ways that will not burden just a few people who are directly involved in our programs, but to share the tasks together with as many who are concerned with providing the test for Hawaii’s young people.

Please consider supporting some or all of our fundraising projects we have initiated. Our goal to support educational endeavors can only help ourselves and our community.

MAHALO!

LU'AU 2008

NA OPIO PA'ANI (The Young Players)

A Benefit Reunion Dinner

Saturday, June 7, 2008

Kilohana Kai Scholarship Lu’au Na Opio Pa’ani 2008

Kilohana Kaiis now marking its 12th year of providing college scholarships to the young people of Hawaii and grants to schools for educational trips and programs. We again ask our loyal supporters for your kolua by your attendance in our 5th “Na Opio Pa’ani” Lu’au to renew our commitment in helping these worthwhile endeavors. June 7, 2008 (Saturday) is the date.

The core of Kilohana Kai’s remains the MCKINLEY TENNIS PROGRAMS and its former team members who took an additional step forward to help those who would follow them. Since its beginning in 1995, we have been blessed with the support of former team members, friends and supporters, teachers, adult class member and many others who rallied to our cause when they were called upon.

Our purpose of our lu’au, which began in 1999, is a gathering of all of us who have crossed paths in the years gone by and share bonds for helping the younger generation become successful in society. The lu’au, held at the McKinley School cafeteria, is for great fellowship, good food (Cafeteria Staff), great entertainment, door prizes galore, and best yet, a bargain price - $15.00 (same since 2001).

Kilohana Kai has been committed since day one to accomplish its goal of supporting student trips, scholarships, and grants for various educational programs. This lu’au will help in continuing our pursuit and we hope to include you and others you know in this gathering.

We hope that you will mark this date on your calendar and make plans on attending.

Our contributions are modest, but their impact on the recipients, which we know by their responses to us, is tremendously rewarding. Your KOKUA will be a part in this investment in the young people of Hawaii.

The 5th Annual Na Opio Pa'ani Lu'au is Dedicated in Memory of My Friend Lawrence "Larry" Wong (1936-2007)

My friend, Lawrence "Larry" Wong, was one of the most giving and selfless people that I have had the honor of knowing. His career as an American History teacher went far beyond the doors of his classroom. For over 25 years, he took thousands of high school students on American Heritage tours to Washington D.C., giving them the opportunity to experience our nation's rich culture and history. These once in a lifetime opportunities were made possible by his endless fundraision efforts, all for the enrichment and betterment of the lives of his students. His selflessness did not stop there, Larry also raised thousands of dollars, to provide assistance for people devastated by national or world disasters. With his help, hundred of "take out dinners" would be sold in a matter of days. The following fundraisers are just a few of his many endeavors.

Hurricane Iniki Lu'au
Kobe Earthquake Fundraiser
Los Angeles Earthquake Relief Dinner
911 Fundraiser for NYC FD
Hurricane Katrina Relief Fundraiser
Two Al Harrington Show Fundraisers
Kilohana Kai Lu'au Fundraisers

Although a resident of Los Angeles, he supported all of our Kilohana Kai fundraising events. The four previous "Na Opio Pa'ani Lu'au" fundraisers would not have been possible without his assistance.

This 2008 Lu'au is dedicated to Larry Wong because he taught me that life has more meaning if you put other people first.

You are "MY FRIEND FOREVER"

Kilohana Kai Scholarship Fundraising Project 2007 School Year

Kilohana Kai is now marking its 11th year of providing college scholarships to the young people of Hawaii and grants to schools for educational trips and programs. We again ask our loyal supporters for your kokua to help us continue our efforts by making a modest monetary donation from the heart. In 2006, to celebragte the ten years of Kilohana Kai’s efforts, we treated our younger generation with a “mini-carnival” at the McKinley School Cafeteria on May 27. Invited were kids from Kaahumanu Elementary, Boy’s and Girls Club (Washington Middle) and the young and the “young at heart” from the Kilohana Kai and McKinley Ohana. FREE lunch, snacks (ice cream and popcorn), games provide by the McKinley Tennis Team, a magic show, Bon Dancing and prizes for every one make it an enjoyable afternoon to remember.Last year, we also raised funds through a joint effort with our sister organization in Los Angeles, the Larry Wong American Heritage Foundation (LWAHF) in a “raffle” for a drawing for a new 2006 Ford Mustang. The lucky winner of the thousands of names entered was our very own Nicole Kuwahara of Honolulu. If you receive this letter , you are automatically entered for this year’s drawing for a 2007 Mustang. (See accompanying flyer). Kilohana Kai and the LWAHF have supported each other throughout the years in many fundraisers and promotions to benefit our schools and communities here in Hawaii and in California. Our 2007 “Na Opio Pa’ani Luau” scheduled for June is tentatively being rescheduled to a fall date. We will keep you informed. Our contributions are modest, but their impact on the recipients, which we know by their responses to us, is tremendously rewarding. Your donation will be a part of this investment in our young people of Hawaii.
